“HOLD UP.” PARKER STARED at the boat. “This is yours?”

I couldn’t believe it either. We had walked into an inlet where a small yacht was docked. It had the words C Worthy written in gold letters along the back.

“Don’t act so surprised,” X replied, taking off his shoes and tossing them onto the boat before hopping aboard. “Different identities require … um … different lifestyles.” He dropped the duffel bag. “It’s one of the perks of the job. C Worthy was something I picked up a couple of years ago. It’ll keep us mobile and serve us well until I hear from B.”

“Mm-hmm.” I still doubted everything X said because I knew what I’d overheard on his call. It didn’t matter what he tried to have us believe.

I glanced around to see if there was some way for us to escape, but the place looked deserted. Plus, where would we go?

“Listen, I already told you that Sterling believes that I’m a hired gun whose job it is to find your father. Being on the inside was the only way we could keep tabs if they were getting close to your family.” X held out his hand to help me aboard. “It was part of your father’s plan.”

“So you say,” I muttered as I purposely ignored his outstretched hand and stepped up onto the boat, only wobbling slightly. I trusted X’s explanation as little as his silence and secrecy from before. I walked away, straight up the steps to the main deck, and Parker followed me without a saying a word.

“Take off your shoes!” X called out as I opened the glass door that separated the outdoor lounge area from the interior of the boat. “Both of you!”

I rolled my eyes as I kicked off my sneakers, and Parker slowly walked around, his fingers gliding over the high-gloss wood that surrounded the ship’s navigation controls.

“Hoo-wee.” He whistled. “This is one fancy boat.” He jumped into the captain’s chair and put his hands on the steering wheel. “It’s like being in a fancy cockpit.”

“What do you think of what X said?” I said, looking out at X, who was untying us from the dock. “About my dad’s plan?”

Parker shrugged. “I don’t know. I mean, if he wanted to turn us in … he could’ve done it already. I can’t see how keeping us around helps him. He may be legit.”

“I guess.” I looked out to the open water. Pretty soon we’d be out there with nowhere to run to. No way of escaping.

“I’m going to check things out below deck,” Parker said, heading down the interior stairs. “You want to come?”

“Not right now,” I said. I wanted to think things through. Go over everything X had told us.

Even though I had my doubts, X seemed to have a reasonable explanation for what I’d overheard. Plus, even if I didn’t fully trust him, he was the best chance we had at meeting up with my dad. Without him, I wouldn’t know how to find him.
